Graphic Organizer Development
Of the six students who participated in the study, five showed change in the scores on
their graphic organizers throughout the ten weeks of the study. This was demonstrated by
an increase in scores on final drafts of graphic organizers submitted with final drafts of
writing tasks. Also, five of the six students chose to create a graphic organizer prior to
writing the essay for their final assessment, and three students created graphic organizers
that received full points for organization and content.
Writing Organization and Idea Development
Of the six students who participated in the study, four showed marked change in
written organization and idea development in their scores on the final assessment.
Furthermore, those students who made marked improvement in graphic organizer
development also made marked improvements in written organization and idea
development in their compositions. One student, Subject D, was inconsistent in the use
and development of graphic organizers. However, when he did create a thorough graphic
organizer he also received full points on organization and idea development in his writing.
Metacognition
Of the six students who participated in the study, three showed significant change in
metacognition. Subjects A and F increased significantly in their knowledge about cognition.
And Subjects A, E, and F increased significantly in their regulation of cognition.
