Statement of Research Hypothesis


         It was the hypothesis for this study that English 101 students who received explicit 

instruction in prewriting strategies would improve essay organization and idea 

development as measured by a writing rubric, metacognitive survey and graphic organizer

 rubric. The underlying assumption for this hypothesis is that students need more 

classroom time, more strategies for writing, and more scaffolded teacher support as they 

engage in writing and the writing process.
