Planned Outcomes
In this study I wanted to better understand the learning needs of my Composition 101
students as they pertain to prewriting and planning during the writing process. I also
wanted to help students become more aware of their own strengths and weaknesses as
readers and writers and then set goals for themselves in these areas.
I anticipated that students would have marked improvement in their organization and
idea development as a result of the use of prewriting strategies. Students would become
more aware of their own thinking and the strengths and weaknesses of their strategic
knowledge. As a result of this new metacognitive awareness, students would feel more
prepared for future writing and learning experiences at the university.
Students did improve in idea development and organization in their graphic organizers
and in their compositions. To a lesser degree, students became more metacognitively
aware of their strengths and their weaknesses of their strategic knowledge.
