Exemplary Practice
The exemplary practice for this study stems from the Self-Regulated Strategy Model
(SRSD) developed by Steve Graham and Karen Harris (1993). SRSD was founded on six stages
of instruction (De La Paz & Graham, 2002, p. 691). With the SRSD model, students first build
their background knowledge prior to working with strategies and then are more able to
manipulate information through the use of the instructional strategies. Second, students and the
teacher must explicitly discuss the instructional strategies that will be implemented as well as
the benefits and expectations for those strategies. Third, the teacher must model the strategies
for students so that they can see a tangible representation of strategies in use. Fourth,
students must work to memorize the strategies. Fifth, students and the teacher must work
collaboratively as the strategies are implemented so that they are supported in their practice.
Finally, students must engage in independent application of the strategies (Luke, 2006).
Through the implementation of these stages, students learn to set goals, engage in self-
instruction, monitor their writing and learning processes, and reinforce their own learning (Luke,
2006).
