Description of the Population

       All students who are entering their freshman year at Hope University must take an

 exam prior to enrolling in their courses. If the essays that they compose for this exam are

 well-organized and the ideas well-developed they can test out of Composition 101 and

 move on to Composition 102. Therefore, those students who are enrolled in Composition

 101 have writing skills they need to develop. Hope University has a diverse 

population and this carries over into Composition 101 classes.  Each Composition 101 

class usually has a mixture of adults returning to school and 19 year olds straight out of 

high school as well as small percentage of African Americans, Asians, and Hispanic 

students.
