Analysis of Change in Metacognition: Subject A

When Subject A first took the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory at the beginning of the
semester, he received low points in Procedural Knowledge and in the Knowledge About
Cognition category of the assessment. He also received significantly low points in the areas
of Planning and Comprehension Monitoring and in the category Regulation of Cognition.
These areas were interesting to note. Procedural Knowledge included using learning
strategies to be successful. Subject A simply began writing his composition during the initial
assessment rather than employing strategies to help him develop strong ideas. Regulation of
Cognition is the ability to manage the cognitive processes to achieve positive outcomes.
Again, for Subject A, planning was a weak area as was Comprehension Monitoring. In his
final Metacognitive Awareness Inventory, Subject A improved dramatically in Procedural
Knowledge, Planning, and Comprehension Monitoring.
